Responsibility's Lover
“Don’t go.” her voice was firm and direct.
“Darling, I have to go. it’s my responsibility, I can’t go back on my word.”
He said as he wiped her eyes with his loving finger tips, his touch so soft and caring. It only made her cry even harder.
“Well what about your word to me?” she tried. “Aren’t I part of your responsibility too.” she sobbed.
He pulled in a deep breath and held her close as he let it out. “You knew who I was before you got this close, we both did darling.” he reminded her.
“Yeah, well that doesn’t make me feel any better you know!” she stated in a voice now raising.
He sighed, “I know, but it’s the best I’ve got for now sweetheart.” he said as he turned around and continued to stuff clothing into his black duffle bag.
“It just isn’t right you know!” she protested. “It isn’t right that you leave me every-time someone calls that d**n cell phone of yours… I HATE that f**king thing!” she said now getting louder as he tossed the bag over his shoulder and started walking out the door.
“WHY YOU! hah? WHY, why can’t he get someone else to do this job!?” she barked.
He stopped and turned around to face her, his hand on the door’s knob, “Because darling, there AINT anyone else who can do what I can do, you know that. It’s gotta be me.” he replied point blank.
“NO it doesn’t! just tell them NO you’re NOT going, that’s it. Finial!” she gave it one last shot.
“Can’t do that darling, if I don’t go, no one else will and a lot of lives will pay for my being selfish. I just can’t do that.” he explained.
“Why the HELL NOT? Hah, WHY? They are always using you, ALWAYS and you don’t even get a thank you, you get spat on. I don’t get it, I just don’t get why you care about them so d**n much. Expalin THAT one to me?” she inquired, her hands now on her hips.
“It’s part of who I am, you know that.” he quitely answered.
“Then CHANGE!” she demanded.
“If I did… I wouldn’t be the man you fell in love with. Believe me, I wouldn’t be that man at all.” he quietly responded.
“Maybe I would like the other guy better anyway, at least he’d be at home.” she sobbed, her head in her hands.
He scratched his head and walked over to her, dropped his bag and held her in his arms closely. She could feel his warmth and loving embrace as they both silently stood for a long while in each other’s arms.
“Now you know you don’t mean that, you wouldn’t be happy with a selfish, self concerned man, with no need to help anyone else when it was in his power to do so. No, that’s not what you want, even if he is at home. Is it?” he softly asked with a smile looking her in the eyes as he held her face in his strong hands.
She cast her eyes to the side as she lowered her head ever so slightly. “No, your right.” she agreed kissing him and wrapping her arms around his neck.
He bent down to pick his bag up and stated, “I’ll be back in 3 weeks darling, you have my word, and my heart.” he added.
With a final kiss, he walked out the door. She cried as the roar of his motor bike disappeared into the night.
